Worshipping God: Out of Church and into the World – Will You Join Me?

The Easter season is almost over.  It ends June 12th with the feast of Pentecost which celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church. On this day, with the descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ’s mission is completed, and the New Covenant is inaugurated.

The season after Easter is known as ordinary time  not because it is humdrum and boring but because there are no celebrations of major feasts during this season.  Like many others I prefer to call it kingdomtide because this is the season when we are meant to be living into the kingdom of God here on earth.  This is the season for being God’s representatives and advocates  – taking our worship of God out of the church and into the world.

This is my theme for a synchroblog/guest posts over the next few months Worshipping God: Out of the Church and into the World.  Will you join me?  A couple of years ago I hosted a similar series What is a Spiritual Practice?  and hope that this series too will help us to connect to God and learn to worship God in the ordinary acts of everyday life.  When I posted about watering the garden as a reenactment of baptism, one woman who had been involved in digging wells in Africa for years, responded that she had never thought of this as a spiritual act.  Her worship of God was totally divorced from her everyday life and more tragically from her ministry.

One of my concerns is that as pastors and church leaders we often teach our congregations to live in the world we live in rather than the world they inhabit 24/7.  Everything we do is meant to be an act of worship to God that connects us more intimately to the God we love and to the story our God invites us to be a part of.  Our responsibility as Christian leaders is to help people make these connections and encourage them to strengthen their faith by doing so.  The early Celtic Christians believed that every activity and encounter entered into was an opportunity to both represent and interact with God and I think we should too.

So this is my challenge to all of us this kingdomtide.  What are the activities of your everyday life that make you feel most intimately connected to God?  Please tell us so that others too can find a more intimate connection to God through the everyday activities of their lives.  I am looking for posts of 500 – 800 words that focus on where you feel connected to God in everyday life and why that draws you more intimately into the presence of God.  So please blog about it on your blog and send me both the link to your blog and the post itself so that I can post it on Godspace.
