Have you ever wondered what happens to all those candles that get used once or twice at church and then disappear? Well here is one possibility:
Believe it or not you can get a blaze going in a minute with these firestarters, which combine recycled church candles with wood fiber…. Amen! A truly ecumenical blend: 30% Lutheran, 30% catholic and 40% all other. Read more
Now I am all for churches recycling and I appreciate the sentiments of this company but there was still something about this advertising that I struggled with.
What do you think about this?

Christine, I cackled with laughter. Mmmm….think I see what you might mean with some of the names of the products but… I think if they are a successful company doing this, a lot of it would be attributed to the marketing. When are they opening an Australian branch?
Blessings and bliss
Christine, looks to me like a fun way to market a recycled and environmentally friendly product. I can think of many other more tasteless ways to market this item – or even just marketing it through WalMart. When I first saw you title I thought it might be about people who get things going in an ecumenical fashion – like MSA!
“This little light of mine…”
Well Christine…maybe you’re struggling like I am with the whole consumer/marketing culture influence that’s SO obvious with this.
What if church’s were given the formula for making these fire-starters and encouraged to make them for the congregations. It would certainly be a unique and welcomed “ministry” — especially in places with cold winters.
I can hear it already: “Hi, my name is Stefan. I head up our church’s fire-starting ministry. Wanna join us?”
Blessings,
Chris
I love this idea – almost as good as the Burning Bible – “that’s one hot book” http://www.make-digital.com/make/vol13/?pg=64
